Reporting On Companies Who Still Advertise on the Rush Limbaugh Show

In my post this morning I provided a list of companies who reportedly advertised on Rush Limbaugh’s show. I have personally called them and this is my report of what I have learned.

1. Pro-flowers: Their sales line was so busy that I was automatically disconnected.

2. Sleep Train: No longer advertising

3. e-harmoney: No longer advertising

4. Carbonite: Carbonite has not discontinued their support of the show. The representative I spoke with simply said that they advertised with a wide variety of shows, and that the views expressed did not represent theirs. I explained that by advertising on his show they are making it possible for him to use a public radio show to give voice to his foul and distasteful comments. You may be interested in e-mailing a manager at their corporate office to share your views at : dfriend@carbonite.com.

5. Sleep Number Bed: I was only able to leave a message. They can be reached at investorrelations@selectcomfort.com.

6. Oreck: They are still advertising on the Limbaugh show and more people need to let them know that we will not buy or support their products. You can reach them at 1-800-289-5888.

7. Midwest Life: I was advised that they have not advertised with Limbaugh for 6 years.

8. Auto Zone: I spoke with “Art” and he was not aware of the controversy. He indicated her would “look into it”, but he made need some encouragement to realize that this is important. You can reach Auto Zone at:

901-495-7185; Fax: 901-495-8374

investor.relations@autozone.com

UPDATE:  “Brenda” with Auto Zone called and indicated they do not advertise with the Rush Limbaugh show.

9. Legal Zoom: They indicated they are “looking into this matter.” You can reach them at 800-773-0888 to encourage to look a little faster.

10. Citrix Online: This company is well aware of the problem, and the gentleman I spoke with shared his personal feelings of support for all those complaining. He indicated the “marketing team” is working on a press release, and they have my blog information, so hopefully we will be hearing from them soon. Until that time you can reach them at 805-690-6400.

11. American Forces Network: I contacted various numbers and got a message at each. The number that I would recommend you call is 301-222-6236 which is the number for T.V. and radio show contacts. You can also reach them by e-mail at American Forces Network@MyAFN.net.

12. Mission Pharmacal Company: They don’t have a customer service department that is open on Fridays. When you go to their web site, it is so busy, that you can’t get the site to load on your computer. Mission Pharmacal Company is the maker of Citrical, a calcium supplement primarily used by women to prevent Osteoporosis. I used to take Citrical supplements every day, but will no longer use their products until they stop advertising on Limbaugh’s show. Bennett Kennedy is the Citracal Product Manager and you can reach him at 800-531-3333 by going to the company directory and putting in “ken”.

13. Life Quotes: They previously advertised on Limbaugh’s show, but no longer do.

14. Lending Tree: I contacted their office at 877-768-3983. I was advised by Donna that as of 2012 Lending Tree is no longer advertising with the Rush Limbaugh show. Donna was not aware of the exact time they discontinued their advertisements, but as of today they are no longer advertising with him.

Thus the following companies need further encouragement to discontinue their advertising on the Rush Limbaugh show:

#4-Carbonite, #6-Oreck, #8 Auto Zone, #9 Legal Zoom, #10 Citrix Online, #12 Mission Pharmacal

  1. Thanks for the list, Malia. The one I find most questionable given the circumstances is the maker of Citrical, which is marketed at and to women! You’d think they’d be the first ones off the Limbaugh show.

And to think that the women who take Citrical are women who are educated enough to understand the importance of calcium supplements, are the same women who appreciate the importance of birth control pills for women?!

Hello Tina and thank you for contacting Carbonite Customer Support.

We do not endorse political views or opinions of the companies, magazines, newspapers, TV stations or radio stations that we advertise on. We simply choose a range of programs designed to reach a broad range of people so they might hear about Carbonite. Dave Friend, Carbonite’s Founder and CEO wrote this on his blog here: http://www.carbonite.com/en/blog/Politics-and-Backup

Please let us know if you need additional assistance.

      1. I just received this response from Carbonite:

        Hello,

Over the past two days we have received a tremendous amount of feedback on Rush Limbaugh’s recent comments. I too am offended and very concerned about his comments. Limbaugh’s remarks have us rethinking our future use of talk radio.

We use more than 40 talk show hosts to help get the Carbonite message out to the public. The nature of talk radio is that from time to time listeners are offended by a host and ask that we pull our advertising. This goes for conservatives like Limbaugh and progressives like Stephanie Miller and Ed Shultz. We even get customers who demand that we pull the plug on NPR. As an advertiser, we do not have control over a show’s editorial content or what they say on air. Carbonite does not endorse the opinions of the shows or their hosts.

However, the outcry over Limbaugh is the worst we’ve ever seen. I have scheduled a face-to-face meeting next week with Limbaugh during which I will impress upon him that his comments were offensive to many of our customers and employees alike.

Please know your voice has been heard and that we are taking this matter very seriously.

        Regards,
        Dave

    3. Malia, this is an example of what we’re emailing out. Also there is a website called boycottrush.org I’ve not been able to get on because server is crashing but it was mentioned by Crystal Ball on MSNBC.
Subject: Boycotting Rush Limbaugh Advertisers – Your Company Is On The List!

      Hello –
I am a member of a women’s coalition in Washington DC area. We have complied a list of all the companies who are still advertising on the Rush Limbaugh show and will be emailing that list to our constituents (approximately 4000) and requesting that each constituent boycott the companies on that list as well as email everyone in their address books suggesting that they too boycott companies on that list.

As of March 2, 2012 your company and product is on our boycott list. We sincerely hope that you will reconsider advertising your product on the Rush Limbaugh show.

      Many Thanks
      Tina

    1. Truly excellent work, but offensive name calling is why this guy should have his national platform removed (notice, I’m not saying he doesn’t have the right to free speech, just doesn’t need to be paid for being offensive and spouting hate speech)
That said, his opposers should also make sure that we’re not guilty of the same offense. Calling him Limpballs is the same as him referring to a woman as a slut.

      Like

      1. Fiona,
Calling him a name is unnecessary, but its hard not to do so, and the difference is that he is on national radio.

        Like

      2. Public forums potentially have the same public exposure as national radio stations. Look at Tommy watsisname who shot his daughters laptop – viral value: 30million plus viewers. You may not feel that calling him names carries as much weight as when he does (because he’s a celebratory) and I may have been far more derogatory to Mr L in my own home (who can tell, surely may Dog and cat wont say). While the misogynistic, violent and hateful comments that Mr L vomits each time his program aired should not get the audience it does, it doesn’t make sense to behave in the same way as he does.
Lets take the moral high ground….

  6. Just curious Malia, as a person who has practiced law, in your opinion, does Ms Fluke have grounds to sue Rush Limbaugh for slander? He made some serious accusations to a very large audience. But I don’t know the legal grounds to filing such a suit.

It would be “Hilarious” if she were able to sue his wallet to be as bankrupt as his soul. Then he could spend the rest of his life in Bangkok selling tricks as a male prostitute to sex tourists. You just know that’s what he really wants out of life.

    Like

    1. Rick,
The “slut” remark is more of a descriptive term…like ugly…and probably the only way to prove it slanderous would be to prove that Ms. Fluke is a virgin. Truth is always a defense to a slander remark, so if she has had sex, it would just be a matter of degree. The “prostitute” comment would be easier to prevail on since she could probably testify that she had never taken money for sex, and that limbaugh said it intentionally to harm her reputation. I don’t know if she’ll consider suing him, but I think she could.

      Like

      1. Actually, I would think the fact that Ms. Fluke never once raised her own sex life during the testimony whereas Limbaugh states over and over again that she stated “she had so much sex that she used up $3k of birth control” is a pretty valid point to hit on in terms of defamation. I just watched the testimony in its entirety and she didn’t once claim anything related to her sexual activity. I think she would have a pretty good case.

What I find ironic in this is that birth control is a fixed cost. A woman takes the same amount regardless of how much sex she has (or doesn’t). The fact that he claims she had run out of birth control because she was having so much sex is just amazing. I think he’s getting it confused with his viagra.

        Like

      2. Matt,
You are so right! I don’t think he knows the first thing about birth control pills. What does that tell you? If he’s been married several times, and his wives didn’t have a need for birth control?

        Like

      3. Ms Fluke said she is considering a lawsuit at some point but is concentrating on women’s health issues right now.

        Like

    2. As an Illinois lawyer, I think she would have a great case if it were filed here. Our Supreme Court ruled in 1996, in KIMBERLY BRYSON v. NEWS AMERICA PUBLICATIONS, INC, that the word “slut” is libelous per se, so long the word was used to describe someone’s sexual conduct. In a case involving libel per se, the plaintiff does not need to prove that they have been actually damaged by the statement; instead, damages are presumed.

There are other tort claims that she might make, such as intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The biggest question I’d be thinking about now if I were representing her is where she wants to bring suit. Since the libel was on a nation-wide radio broadcast, it is arguable it could be brought in any state, though I think it is likely that it would be brought either in DC, where Georgetown is, Virginia or Maryland, if she currently lives in either one of those states, or in Florida, where Rushbo is. I’d be looking for the most favorable law, in a state with generous juries.

Rush Limbaugh, within the last hour, has slandered Ms. Fluke again. He’s loving the publicity. An obese school yard bully — but I believe she could sue him for slander. He’s attacked her reputation with no basis in fact.

  10. I completely agree about Citracal. I am generally skeptical of the effectiveness of consumer boycotts, but Rush’s comments were so gross and so antithetical to the women’s health focus of this product, that I can’t see how they could continue to support his show. To the person who asked whether Bayer was worth contacting, yes, I think so. They distribute Citracal and Mission Pharmacal is the manufacturer (they also make prenatal vitamins). I sent Bayer a message through their Citracal product page: http://citracal.com/en/email-us.php . Also left a msg with Mission Pharmacal since I could not find an email for them. Note – there are also product reviews on the web for Citracal that may be worth commenting on…

He said that Oreck is proud of their record on women’s issues (they have a connection with Komen . Great! Is there a pink vacuum out there? Sorry, I’m no longer impressed by the pink ribbons.). Kevin suggested I visit Oreck’s Facebook page. I did look, but found nothing concerning Rush or Flukes. The irony is that I’ve been shopping for a new vacuum cleaner and I typically like to purchase from Costco because of their easy exchange program and warranties. My statement to Kevin was that I would rather support Oreck and purchase their products from Costco (we are also looking at one of their air purifiers) rather than approach Costco to discontinue carrying their brand. Was Kevin just shining me on; are they not advertising during Rush’s program?

I agree and when I called each company, I started the conversation by asking if they advertised on the Limbaugh show. The problem was that many of the companies didn’t know the extent of their advertising, and they simply bought a package deal and didn’t know with whom they were advertising. This made them pay attention.

My suggestion this evening to friends on Facebook is that the civil liberties that women of my generation [college graduate 1974] and our Grandmothers fought for in getting the ability to vote need to be seriously addressed by political actions now and that we get our daughters to stand up and address these issues. My proposal is that we need to use every available communication method possible including phone calls, letters, Twitter, e-mail, blogs, etc. addressed not only to the companies that support programing such as Rush, but also to reassure any politicians that are participating in bringing this type of legislation that they will not continue in or obtain political office. To further that I found this site in an effort to find out who is supporting Rush’s misguided, money making efforts and found this site. It will go on my FB page tomorrow, as will this website. Thank you.

I have been working in the legal industry for the past 20 years and I do think that she should take some sort of legal action. Jurisdiction would be interesting as a question alone. However, the fact that this could affect her future legal career means that she has nothing to lose. What will be most interesting is what legal team has the guts to take this fight on and pro bono at that. Just how creative can civil litigation get? American Civil Liberties can’t do everything.

I’m tired too! I was on the computer the entire day yesterday, and today appears to b e more of the same. The important thing is that we are part of a larger group of people across the country who are tired of listening to this crap from Limbaugh, and now people are doing something about it.

I’d like to write to Sandra Flukes as well and encourage her to go after him legally in a major way. He’s such a foul bastard!

I think I’ll go have a glass of wine and chill out for awhile.

I think a lot of women feel the same way that you are feeling. I know I do. This event has put me in a position to be unable to ignore any longer the “War on Women” that has been lodged for some time now. I have tried to focus my energies on the Republican candidates, and on Sarah Palin, but I am just unable to focus on them since Limbaugh said what he did!

  33. As posed by Oreck on Facebook:

Hello to our friends and our new visitors! We appreciate your concern. We wanted to research and make sure we had as many facts as possible before responding so it took us a little while to respond. First, we do not support any derogatory comments to any person, female or male. Second, we do not advertise on Rush nor any other radio show; however, apparently a year or so ago we did some radio ads which may have aired on Rush as part of a broad media placement (we are looking into that); so, from what we can find out, we show up on some sort of sponsorship list that is not current (at least not with regard to us). Now, to be completely honest, it is possible (but unlikely) that one of the many hundreds of independent retailers who carry Oreck products and place their own local advertising ran a local radio spot that aired during Rush’s show. We are still trying to find that out. But even if that occurred, we are certain that it was not intended to sponsor any particular political view and was definitely not intended to sponsor or support derogatory statements such as those made by Rush. Oreck has a long standing history of supporting women and many issues important to women. With that kind of history, we hope that we can get the benefit of the doubt. Thanks!

  35. Rush Limbaugh is a reminder to us all that birth control is a must. Seriously, this is a man who’s language and influence make him more than just an “entertainer”. Bill Maher is an entertainer, Rush Limbaugh is a idiot.

Keep in mind, Limbaugh is yet another result of a) Roger Alies, and b) the rescinding of the Fairness Doctrine during the Reagan years. “He IS the Republican Party,” James Carville said last night on Maher.

One of the first things I remember from this guys mouth was the effort in 1988 to suspend the 22nd Amendment so Reagan could serve a third term. And then he joined in the demented chorus that accused Hilary Clinton of murdering Vince Foster.

It’s just escalated from there. He obviously can’t stand women or people who support them. A few years ago, he almost came out in favor of pedophiles and his current wife is 25 years younger than him. The man hates everything and everyone who voted for President Obama. He is also the one who touted Sarah Palin in 2008. This is a man who has no children and he vilifies those who do.

Yet this entertainer is welcomed at C-PAC and other Conservative outlets. This is a man who openly talks about the President “ending up like (John) Kennedy.” A man who, four days before President Obama was sworn-in, said “I hope he fails.” And that echo chamber that is the GOP bubble has been repeated time and time again and it shows in the open disrespect of this President from Louis Gohmert to Allen West to Joe Walsh to Joe Wilson to Jan Brewer.

Yet somehow, Limbaugh will proceed to survive. Until radio stations actually start pulling him off their stations, this will amount to the same things he has outraged us about for the past 25 years.

These customers have expressed their growing concern that some of his recent comments seem inconsistent with the core values Citrix has always stood for – humility, integrity and respect.

While Citrix obviously does not control any show’s content or endorse opinions of their hosts, we do take the concerns of our customers seriously. When they are upset about something, we listen. After careful consideration, we have decided to discontinue our advertising on The Rush Limbaugh Show.

Not clear if the prices are any cheaper than their prices to non-Limbaugh fans, but the fans are definitely given a special greeting. There is also a box on top to click that says “Hear about us on radio or TV?” that allows you to provide a password, that a listener would have presumably heard on air for the extra discount. And if you google ProFlowers with “Limbaugh” and “discounts”, many links come up for Christmases and Mother’s Days in years past indicating discounts especially for Limbaugh fans.

So where are the videos of you getting a rush, Rush? According to your warped logic, it is my right to watch your personal peccadilloes on the Internet if I care to (and I don’t care to, btw). It is disingenuous at best, fraudulent probably, that your professional advertisements proclaim a concern for women’s health, while you publically advertise on Rush Limbaugh’s show.
I can think of no demographic section of Limbaugh’s audience that would prescribe a Mission product.

This is a a backhanded apology at best, although I didn’t truly expect much more from the man. You’ll see that he tries to explain away his mouth by saying he was only trying to be humerous… sorry, but I fail to see how calling a woman a slut is amusing. Tells you something about the man and his views towards women, doesn’t it? Ok, here it is– the “apology”:

    A Statement from Rush
    March 03, 2012
For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit?In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone’s bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level.

My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.

    1. Cindy,
I think it is offensive that he would try to justify his comments by saying that they were intended to be humorous. Just the fact that he thinks it is funny is offensive. However it is clear that he is being disingenuous as he made the comments worse in the days that followed, and it was until Saturday that he even tried to create the appearance of an apology.

His rantings are dangerous to women AND men as they promote HIS views, views that are coming from a self absorbed, chauvinistic windbag. I’m curious Mike … are you married or in a relationship? If so, how does the woman in your life feel about you telling the concerned citizens to grow a brain? It’s not about whether we are listening to this PIG .. of course we can turn it off (that is, if anyone on this site is actually listening). It’s about his wrath against women and anyone that doesn’t agree with this pompous ass. He is so ignorant that he doesn’t even know how birth control works or what other offerings it has other than stopping an unwanted pregnancy. And the fact that he is a known drug addict and user of Viagra should make it clear that it’s all about his agenda. Wake up and smell the coffee, Mike. It isn’t about listening or not listening … it’s about human decency and the right to speak out on important issues without having your character assassinated by a a self serving jerk. Why should the government not pay for birth control? Viagra is covered by insurance. Can you not see the hypocrisy or the sheer lunacy of that????
