The Craziest Thing Bachmann Has Said

Michele Bachmann has made a name for herself by saying outrageously crazy things.

Bachmann has pledged that if elected President she would make the deficit her priority, and that she would reduce the national debt.In an effort to confuse the issues of the debt ceiling and the national debt, or perhaps because she was confused, Bachmann refused to vote to raise the debt ceiling.

Bachmann has taken the absurdity of her positions on the economy to a whole new level. On Saturday she declared that if elected President she would turn the economy around within three months, and she would cut corporate taxes, and eliminate capital gains and inheritance taxes. The absurdity of her position on cutting taxes is obvious.

1. Even if elected President she would not be in a position to eliminate any taxes. Congress sets the budget, and as a member of the House of Representatives she currently  has a vote on the budget that she would not have as President.

2. Elimination of inheritance taxes would only decrease revenue, and would not increase jobs or help the economy. Under current law, inheritance tax only applies in the case of an individual inheriting more than $5,000,000.00. Thus the inheritance tax, as it currently exists, only applies to the wealthiest people in the country.  Any amount of money inherited above the $5,000,000.00 would be taxed but reducing an inheritance by a % of any amounts inherited in excess of 5 Million dollars would surely not make a difference in the decision to create a new business or not. Inheritance taxes would be of no consequence to the decision to invest in a company which would create more jobs.

3. The extension of the Bush tax cuts is the single fiscal consideration that is most likely to increase the national debt. The Bush tax cuts are estimated to have put us further in debt by $1.5 trillion, Because Congress men and women like Bachmann refused allow the Bush tax cuts to expire, the Bush tax cuts are now estimated to cost the United States $2.8 Trillion dollars. To suggest that she could balance the budget, and at the same time cut taxes, is just another example of Bachmann’s lack o f intellect.

4. To turn the economy around in “three months” is absurd. No matter how good a plan is, it will inevitably take much more than three months to turn around the U.S. Economy.

Bachmann is crazy to suggest she could balance the budget, cut taxes, and do it in three months.

  1. Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt, folks. Insanity has been described as repeating the same action and expecting different results. Most of my lifetime I have paid over 50% of my income in taxes. While tax cuts are short term vote paybacks, the decrease in revenue has long reaching impacts – namely we have $6.1 trillion in debt thanks to the Bush congresses, and that is before we have to pay off the debt accumulated by the Obama congresses – due to Bush era financing of debt and revenue.

If you think you have been taxed enough already, then you should have to drive on the shoulder of the road, and have to FAA to guide your commercial flight to safety, and your food and medicine should not be inspected by the FDA. We all have to pay for services – even if we will never leave the county we were born in.

Suck it up, buttercups. Our taxes will by necessity have to be increased to increase revenue. Lowering taxes to increase revenue was a pipe dream that has turned into a national nightmare. GOP = admit you were mistaken and let’s get moving forward. Trying the same action – tax cuts – just makes you appear more insane. But maybe that is the real problem; the GOP has insane leadership.

    1. newmexicogold,
Thanks for your comment. It seems so clear that the Bush tax cuts didn’t work, and just magnified the debt. How could they possibly say that reducing taxes even more would reduce the debt?

  2. Yesterday she told Floridians that she supported drilling for oil in the Everglades, one of the most environmentally sensitive ecosystems on the planet. Currently, a $2+ billion restoration effort is going on in the Everglades, overseen by the EPA, because the state has not done the job it was supposed to do on restoration. Bachmann says she is for drilling the Everglades if it can be done “responsibly.” So, according to her logic, we can drill responsibly by eliminating the agency responsible for oversight.

She is definitely trying to one-up Palin and take on the mantle of “Drill, baby, drill.”

It’s like saying they are for balancing the budget without saying how they will do it. When they say “responsible” drilling it means they are advocating drilling and that they are guaranteeing that there will be no environmental effect. Of course that is impossible and Bachmann knows that if there is a spill or an environmental disaster it would be after the election.!

    1. John,
It seems like she doesn’t even care if what she says is outrageously unbelievable. If it sounds good why not? If I were a Republican I would be embarrassed to call her a member of my party.

  5. What about her latest rant about Irene. Telling her audience that Gawd has given us earthquakes & Hurricanes lately because the US is on the wrong path. Pat Robertson must be one of her advisers.

As if we needed hurricanes and earthquakes to tell us we are on the wrong path. You don’t have to be on speaking terms with God to know that. Malia
