America By Heart: The Joke is on Sarah Palin!

Is it possible that America by Heart is a satirical revelation of the fraud that Sarah Palin has become? Is it possible that Sarah Palin never read the book that she supposedly wrote? Since the Katie Couric interview when Palin was asked what she reads, everyone in America, fans and critics, wondered if she really reads anything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRkWebP2Q0Y. Certainly Levi Johnston indicated he “never saw her reading much at all.” http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2009/10/levi-johnston200910. It seemed hypocritical that a person who doesn’t read books, would write two. We knew Lynn Vincent was the “ghost writer” for Going Rogue, so there was no thought that Palin actually wrote her first book. With regard to the second book, America by Heart, it’s undisputed that she is not responsible for a substantial portion of the book. At least half of the book is quotations from other works, written by other people. Four pages at the end of the book is a list of a multitude of quotes used in the book. Immediately before that list is a section entitled “Acknowledgments.” Palin states:

“…with a special thanks to the brilliant, independent, self-starter who got her start in Alaska, Jessica Gavora. Thank you for your most important work on America by Heart”. Palin, America by Heart, at 272.

So who is Jessica Gavora, and is her use of satire something Palin simply never read, or simply didn’t understand it when she read it?

1. Who is Jessica Gavora? Ms. Gavora graduated from Marquette University and received a master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Her parents live in Fairbanks, Alaska, where they own a number of shopping centers, beverage stores and other businesses. Certainly Ms. Gavora, and her parents, would qualify as members of the “ELITE”. Ms. Gavora is married to Mr. Jonah Goldberg, a contributing editor for the print edition of National Review. He graduated from Goucher College. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B02E1DA1331F935A1575BC0A9679C8B63. Mr. Goldberg has written several articles regarding Sarah Palin. In the first of these articles, he said:

“…Downside: She(Palin) may not be ready for primetime. The heartbeat-from-the-presidency issue is a real one.

Trivia Bonus: My wife used to play basketball against her!”

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/168443/palin/jonah-goldberg. Certainly this would give us a clue that (a.) Ms. Gavora was previously Palin’s opponent, and (b.) Ms. Gavora’s husband recognized Palin’s limitations even before Palin wrote on her hand before criticizing the President for using a teleprompter, resigned her position as Governor, made up words like “refudiate,” suggested that we should build dikes to solve the Gulf Oil Crisis, endorsed candidates like Christine O’Donnell, attacked Michelle Obama for trying to address the national problem of childhood obesity, and before she made reference in a nationally broadcast show to our “North Korean allies.”

2. Palin suggests that she “came across a book written …in 1782, by an emigrant Frenchman turned American farmer with the impressive name of J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur.” America by Heart Id. At 108. Even if Palin read current magazines or newspapers it seems highly unlikely that she simply “came across” this book written by this foreigner. This writer lived from 1735-1813, was of French ancestry, was imprisoned, had a mental breakdown, and was born and died in France. http://www.amazon.com/Letters-American-Sketches-Eighteenth-Century-Classics/dp/0140390065/ref=pd_rhf_p_img_2#reader_0140390065. This author although perhaps well known by “elitist” is not someone we would expect Sarah Palin to know. If she couldn’t tell Katie Couric any magazines or newspapers she reads, and if she couldn’t list any favorite founding father when being interviewed by Glenn Beck, http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/01/beck-calls-bullcrap-on-palins-non-answer-about-favorite-founding-father.php we would not anticipate that she would know of this author. More significantly this author, Mr. St. John de Crevecoeur is:

“…a voice deliberately but deceptively self-mocking, a manner slyly satiric…” Ibib.

3. Palin describes Dancing with the Stars as “…an uplifting, family-oriented show…(so Bristol could) “…challenge herself in a new, fun way.” America by Heart at 122. I might describe Little House on the Prarie as “an uplifting family-oriented show,” but those are not the first words that come to mind when I think of Dancing With the Stars. If I were writing a satiric post about the experience of Bristol Palin, virtually having sex on the dance floor with Marc Ballas, I might describe the show sarcastically as “family-oriented.” I might say that it was an “uplifting experience to see Bristol, prostrate on the dance floor, before starting one of her dances, or ripping the shirt off of her male partner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89yiGsd2ARA. However “uplifting” and “family-oriented” are words that would only be used sarcastically. It would be like describing Pulp Fiction as a movie about a “religious awakening.”

4. Palin describes the importance of spending QUANTITY of time with her children, instead of QUALITY of time. https://malialitman.wordpress.com/2010/12/09/america-by-heart-proves-that-palin-thinks-her-fans-are-stupid. Whatever you know about Sarah Palin, you know that she has not spent any significant quantity of time with her children. Whether you believe her absence from home is justified, or a good thing for the country, certainly everyone would agree that in the last two years Sarah Palin has not spent any significant QUANTITY OF TIME with her children.

5. Palin explains that to avoid poverty people should follow three simple rules. Palin explains that:

“ William Galston …put the matter simply. To avoid poverty, do three things: finish high school, marry before having a child, and produce the child after you are twenty years old. …of thos who fail to do the, 79% will be poor.” America by Heart at 119.

How could Sarah Palin write this? Either she didn’t even read it, or she didn’t understand it when it was written. Surely she isn’t that ignorant! In writing a book where she controls what is written and discussed, why would she point out the very failure of herself as a mother, and that of her daughter? Bristol did finish high school. However her graduation was delayed because she had a child, before being married, and before she turned twenty. If Bristol was a “real” American we would not expect to see her dancing with the stars, and the most she could hope for would be to watch the show on someone else’s television. Instead of driving her new car, we would expect to see Bristol and her baby on a street corner begging for a dollar to pay for formula from the driver of that new car.

The only logical conclusion is that not only did Sarah Palin was not the real author of America by Heart, but that she was too busy to find time to read it. She must have thought it was funny to take credit for the work of others, and to make millions of dollars quoting what other people had already written. Maybe Jessica Gavora thought it was funny too that either Palin never read what Ms. Gavora wrote, or that Palin was so clueless that Palin didn’t understand it. Either way the joke is on Sarah Palin, and on all of her fans who have bought the book.

  1. Leftists like you are disgusted by her because she doesn’t play by the NOW rules…be unattractive, have no/few children, goose step to the leftist agenda. When a woman is conservative, successful, popular, attractive, AND unafraid to speak her mind, it just turns their world upside down.
Next, thing you know, there will be conservative Blacks elected to congress. Oops! Too late!

    1. How droll you are. Can’t you idiots come up with something better. Can’t you get it that a majority of people see this family as grifters and losers. They have no reedeming qualities. What kind of a mother says she has quantity time with her kids. I don’t know any normal parent would say something like that. A majority of parents would say quality time. You want your wet dreams of the quitter go ahead and have them but please don’t shove that quitter down sane peoples throat. We see through her lies. It’s to bad all you see is your wet dreams. Malia has brains and is intelligent and by the way wrote her own books, unlike your quitter who has to be managed at all times. 3. Go troll somewhere else, please. You have entirely missed the point that we don’t care how Palin makes her money as long as she doesn’t do it through dividing the country into approved camps (like “real Amerikuns”) and unapproved (ANY minority, other religions, gays) and by being a near-illiterate spoksperson for the direction our country should take.

SP is a narcissistic grifter, bilking the credulous and (mercifully) annoying the GOP establishment sufficiently that they will block her run ‘to the top.’ Palin is a monstrous hypocrite, posturing as a “hockey Mom” (which she wasn’t ever — factually) when in fact she is now one of the “elitists” (money-wise, albeit not with grey matter).

Adore her, if you insist, but don’t ask those of us who rePudiate her to become the sycophants her “base” is.

    4. No one on the left have jealousy toward Sarah. What does being attractive have to do with running our country? Is she the only women to have children? She can speak her mind all she wants. It makes her look more of a fool then I thought she was already. Even the GOP doesn’t want her. Your last sentence ops there are already Black conservatives. What does that have to do with Sarah? I am a women. When I do vote for a women for President it will be someone with a brain. I voted for Hillary but she didn’t make it. I then voted for our President. If John McCain thought women were stupid enough to think Sarah is anywhere close to the intelligence of Hillary we see where that got him.

Upon first reading, I thought “Of course she didn’t write it”, then “The most engrossing tomes she (Palin) could have read were ‘The Cat in the Hat’ and ‘Green Eggs and Ham'”, Then “People of weak or non-existent ethics COULD be bought by $arah”, Then BAM! Yes, the joke is on $arah Palin, then the capper is “The joke is on her sycophant defenders”. The first comment here is evidence of that!!

      3. It’s a great irony that some of Palin’s sources are “elitists.” She can’t have it both ways, but cobbling a book together from secondary sources is a way to start. Mercifully, having produced one bad book, she made it hard for even her followers to flock for the second one.

  4. Malia–I apologize for your first commenter’s bad manners. Yours is a fascinating post linking Jonah, his wife, and Mrs. Palin. I am beginning to think that more and more “conservatives” are willing to punk the Palin express, because they know they’ve played a part in enabling her. Now they are scurrying because even they have recognized the low-life disaster she might well become for ALL of us. Horse out of barn? They’ll see. And these folks have always thought they could control the message and then pull it back from the brink. With Palin, they drew to an inside straight–not such a wise move.

By the way, idesign thinks he’s still in high school, discussing the prom queen. Or maybe the date that got away. Oh, also too–I wasn’t the prom queen but the Winter Solstice Queen, nominated by the NHS–sick of this feminist bashing. Palin is no feminist, nor author, reader, or decent citizen. She’s an accident of history.

  5. Malia, your post is thought provoking. There’s certainly plenty of irony, so why not satire? I wouldn’t be surprised if she hired someone to organize her “ideas,” then scanned the drafts without putting much thought into what they mean. Certainly she is incapable of seeing her argument from the other side. Which is how she makes so many blunders and why she’s so surprised at the reactions she provokes. Narcissism is not pretty. In any case, the joke is that the book is selling poorly except for the $64,000 worth of units she purchased herself at the discount price of $5 each.

I guess we will see if anyone else reaches this conclusion. Malia

  6. Gee, after you pointed out that Jessica Gavora was probably the true write of this book, I googled her and found this piece that she wrote in Sept. 2008 about Sarah and sports in Alaska. As I read this I take away that she admires Sarah greatly. So, I am wondering if Sarah might not be something she and her husband agree to disagree about?

    http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/015/537kjunq.asp?pg=1

And, she was a speech writer and senior policy advisor for Atty. General John Ashcroft, one of GW’s most frightening appointments. And, she has also written against gender equality laws, strongly. So, it would seem plausible that her POV’s might be right in line with Sarah’s, maybe? Could it be that she is a Palin-bot and believes whatever Sarah tells her and that is how the inconsistencies got in the book?

  7. Jonah Goldberg’s mother, Lucianne Goldberg runs the blog Lucianne.com which is extremely pro Palin with a large group of readers, LDotters, who are promoting her as our next president. They were touting her back in March 2008 and rival the C4Pers in their delusions about her “destiny”. Anyone who even mildly criticizes her is cut to shreds. 10. Perhaps appealing to the “elite” was Palin’s intention after all.

Assuming her followers, on the most part, are not apt to do any background research on the people quoted in the book, Sarah probably thought they’d point to these quotes as proof that “their” fearless leader does read and they’d never be the wiser.

It is highly unlikely that Sarah, herself, would have known muchless asked much, if anything, about the people quoted in her book. I would even go as far to say that she did not think anyone would notice as long as the quotes fit into her overall theme (a scheme to fool the public.)

However, someone ought to point out to Sarah that before erroneously quoting people she essentially knows very little about, it would be prudent to learn more about them, their philosophical views and the context in which those quotes were made.

Because if she was trying to impress the educated “elite,” Sarah failed miserably.

    1. serena1313,
Good Point! If you are to impress the educated “elite” you have to do your homework, as they will. Most of the educated “elite” got there by hard work, not by being a celebrity or by looks alone. I don’t consider myself as part of the “ELITE”. I went to the University of Oklahoma for God’s sake. My parents didn’t have enough money to buy a piano when I wanted to learn to play. When we went out to dinner it was at a drive-in for hamburgers, and the only question was whether we had enough money to be able to afford milk shakes. However my parents expected me to do my homework! I never read about Crevecoeur before doing this article, but a simple search on Amazon told me all I needed to learn to understand what was happening with this book! It is frightening to me that someone so unwilling to do her homework could be the President of the United States. There is so much Palin doesn’t know. The combination of not knowing, and being unwilling to spend the time to learn could be fatal for our country! Malia

  11. Bristol wasn’t actually behind her graduating class. That’s part of the enigma of how she was able to graduate from high school.
Most Alaskans don’t believe she did. Alaskans think that she walked with her class, but that her achievement had to have been either a GED or a certificate.
First, Alaska has tough attendance criteria and graduation requirements. No exceptions, even for teenagers undergoing chemotherapy and dramatically injured.
In People Magazine, she herself stated that her last semester classes were PE and a financial survival skills class. She would have been at least a year or two behind in core educational requirements like math, lab sciences and foreign language. How is it possible for her to have completed real coursework?
Then there’s the attendance issue. She went from Wasilla to Juneau, back to Wasilla and then Anchorage. She never went to summer school. She traveled for her mother while she was governor. She traveled with the McCain campaign. She traveled for Candies’ and in fact, was absent during Senior Finals week and gone for three weeks immediately prior to the end of school and graduation. She didn’t even seem to have been an enrolled student, much less physically present at Wasilla High School; and then suddenly June rolls around and voila!, she’s graduating with her class.
There’s the Exit Exams and Benchmarks. They are strictly scheduled; you can’t just take them whenever. These exams are administered on a particular cycle in order to allow for remediation and successful completion. Students take them in sophomore/junior years, not during senior year. She wasn’t in school. Never mind the testing dates, how would she have had the information to successfully pass them?

Fall 2006/Jan-June 2007: Wasilla, then Juneau
Fall 2007/Jan-June 2008: Wasilla again, then Anchorage
Fall 2008/Jan-June 2009: Nowhere, pregnant, taking care of baby Trig. Birth of Tripp in Dec 2008.
June 2009, Bristol’s high school class graduates. With Bristol.

It’s transparent – if she has an actual diploma, it was a freebie.

  12. I agree, that it’s likely Sarah didn’t read all of this book attributed to her. After all, it’s comparable to pulp fiction, just cranked out to make money and be pitched to a ready-made audience. The public knows the book is unimportant, which is why her book sales are down so much. And for her loyal fans, the point is just to have a hardcover with her mug on the front, that’s enough for them, and that black sharpie scrawl across the inside page. There could be the History of Life insurance printed between the front and back covers, it doesn’t matter.

And as far as her children go, they would normally be ready-set for resentment, as all children of dominant, ego-centric and neglectful mothers are, but the beverly-hillbillies-like windfall they experienced will temper those feelings. I am also not surprised by the “quantity’ over quality belief by Palin, because she’s much too distracted to sit still for five minutes and cultivate anything close to “quality” time. Always multi-tasking and always onto the next thing. Now she’s in Haiti on a photoshoot. And Bristol, who should be home with child after her whirlwind LA experience, (pining that she missed AK and her baby), is instead tagging along with the “quantity-time” mama, no doubt learning how to parent, by example.

He is a cook and works very hard and he pays big time every month for health care for he and his child and he is a great daddy. Believe me if he couldn’t have the court ordered for his child he was suppose to get he’d be in court. Bristol has no right keeping him away from daddy. What is wrong with him?

  13. I think it has escaped the memory of the MSM that Palin finally came out with a “reading list”a year after the campaign, after her handlers felt the Couric stigma had not gone away. Her three sources of news announced THEN were the Wasilla paper, NewsMaxx (shameless disseminator of lies and slander and bulk purchaser of her books) and WSJ, the now-diminished business rag of her mentor, Murdoch.

This is the same list she gave to Barbara Walters last week. Apparently Walters was so “fascinated” that she allowed mention of these sources to slide about without daring to push back on why not the WP or LA Times or NY Times…and WHY NewsMaxx, a hugely discredited organization.

We all know that Palin despises the MSM, but that doesn’t absolve her of the need to know the international and national news they report and how. Or does she plan to be president of only the TP wingnuts?

Can’t wait to see photos of Palin visiting the sick (black) people, holding them, soothing their pain, administering meds, handing out food and vaccine. That would be a good play to her evangelical “base” — unless she thinks there are enough supporters of xenophobic Franklin Graham’s charity to get her into the White House.

Bet this is a fast visit and, folks, will do nothing to help her “foreign policy credentials” as her handlers had claimed. (Given the state of the Haitian presidential election, it’s not as though there’s someone in State to meet with.)

    Three points of interest:
    * Bristol is there — scouting for dancing opps?
    * Todd is there — not running his fishing business
    * Greta Van S. with a mic in Palin’s face sure answers why Palin is there: more TV time for SP.
