The Gulf Coast Spill and Sarah Palin Are Both Toxic

On April 3, 2010, before I began writing for Huffington Post, I published an article on my personal blog entitled Palin Prefers Homilies to Homework – “Drill Baby Drill”.  This post was written two and one half weeks before the tragic explosion in the Gulf Coast on April 21, 2010.  The impetus for the post was the plan unveiled by Barack Obama for additional offshore drilling and Palin’s criticism of that plan.  Throughout the 2008 campaign Palin and McCain advocated the need for more off-shore drilling, by saying, “drill baby drill”. Even when the President indicated that he would consider the authorization of additional drilling, after environmental studies had been conducted, Palin was still critical.  Let me repeat, Palin was critical of the President’s concern for the environment.  At that time Palin suggested by her comments that Obama’s plan was a joke, stating, “…Delays or major restrictions in accessing these resources for environmentally responsible development are not in the national interest…” Now the ever mercurial Palin is attempting to espouse support and concern for the environment, parading around like a card carrying member of Greenpeace.

On April 30, 2010, Palin once again took to her Facebook to express concern for the Gulf Coast. It is as if Palin hopes we have all forgotten her callous attitude and derision of Obama with her slogan, “stall baby stall”. Yet, on her post Palin wrote, “Actions must be taken to increase oversight to prevent future accidents.  Government can and must play an appropriate role here…” It is quite a change from the usual, anti-government rhetoric generally spewed by Palin, though certainly within the same vein of Palin’s characteristic superficiality.

In my April 3rd post, I quoted Richard Feinberg from Alaska, who was an oil and gas analyst, and who consulted with Palin’s administration, before she resigned as Governor, in both 2007 and 2008. Mr. Feinberg prophetically declared, “Based upon my first-hand experience, I can tell you that Sarah Palin is misinforming the public on ACES (Alaska Clear and Equitable Share-one of three pieces of legislation for which she takes credit) as she does many other issues…When it comes to the craft of governance, Palin exhibits a superficiality that I find frightening.  She tends to prefer homilies to homework and all too often over-simplifies or distorts issues.”

It certainly seems that Palin is once again exhibiting vapid and insincere approach.         We probably won’t know for years the extent of the damage caused to the economy and to the fish, birds, and animals in the Gulf Coast.  In the Exxon Valdez spill, scientists estimated that some shoreline habitats might take up to 30 years to recover. The Gulf Coast will probably surpass the environmental devastation of Exxon Valdez.  Even if you have no regard for the environmental impact of this massive spill, consider its economic impact.  Exxon spent an estimated $2 billion dollars in an attempt to clean up of the Exxon Valdez disaster, and another one billion dollars to settle related civil and criminal charges. In that disaster, companies’ dependant upon the local marine population went bankrupt.  Other economic effects included loss of recreational sports, fisheries, and reduced tourism. There is no reason to believe that the Gulf Coast spill will have any less devastating economic effects.  Moreover, the recent spill emphasizes the urgency of developing alternative sources of energy, and the need to lessen our dependence on oil, from any source.

If someone says they “like Sarah Palin”, or if they think the RNC is looking out for what is best for America, remind them that they were the ones that coined the phrases “drill baby drill,” and “stall baby stall.” Remind them that when Barack Obama suggested we should consider the environmental risks inherent in off-shore drilling, it was Sarah Palin who suggested that it was not in our national interest to consider the environmental impact of such drilling.  Both Sarah Palin, and the spill in the Gulf Coast, are toxic to the United States of America.  Surely our memories are vibrant enough to remember those memorable words uttered just weeks ago by Sarah Palin.  She is not a politician.  She is no longer the Vice- Presidential Candidate.  She is just a pretty lady who will say or do anything to allow her to continue to rake in $100,000 per speech, fly in private jets, stay in luxury hotels, and entice people to donate millions of dollars to her PAC.  The citizens of this country, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents deserve better.

  1. This is such an excellent post. Is it on Huffington Post? How can Sarah Palin (RAM) reconcile what her spoken (recorded) and/or written words are one day versus the opposite the next day? We know she is not writing these Facebook Posts but they are in her name.

  2. Sarah’s toxicity is frightening. This terrible spill is a national disaster. Is see a previous post of yours attracted some Palin devotees. Look at the type of people she attracts. Their comments speak volumes about their character and hers. People don’t care about her appearance, they are aghast at what is inside.

  3. Thank you thank you thank you. I have finally found someone who feels as I do and has the facts to back it up.
I actually start to feel physically sick whenever I begin to read of Sarah Palin’s antics. My husband asks me why I don’t like her so much. I can’t seem to find the words to articulate my vehement dislike of this woman. I will now begin to use your facts to back up my argument.
I am nervous that her new-found concern for the environment will only increase her rabid following. HOW CAN NOONE SEE THROUGH THIS?!?!?!?
Oh my goodness do I need to take a deep breath.
Please keep reporting these facts. My mental sanity depends on it!

  4. Another really good one, Ms. Litman! We can only hope that there are people out there who DO remember what she has said, and maybe someday someone will call her on all these things publicly. But will that change the minds of those who are as empty as she? Those who just see the “pretty lady” and do not even take in the “word salad”? I don’t know, but I do still hope.

  5. Bravo! As you have shown, and many of us in Alaska have known, Sarah Palin will say anything to keep the dollars coming in and to try and sound intelligent. As usual, she forgets that the internet is available to show how hypocritical and self-contradictory she is….

Let us never forget! We say this in Alaska about the Exxon Valdez and many in the country are saying this about Sarah Palin and her hypocrisy!

  6. Well done, Malia! Just saw on CNN that BP plans to dump massive amounts of chemicals (what kind and how dangerous?) to try to break up the oil.

FL has already declared a state of emergency for their west coast, and AL is “bracing” for the onslaught. The damage done to the Gulf, the environment along the coasts, to the fishing industry–all incalcuable at this point. And let us not forget the 11 lives lost and those injured.

Palin has no business meddling in oil policy in the US. Yet, there she is in Giddings, TX, lounging at the Dorwin & Joanne Smith’s estate (who also have a residence in AK–Palin lieutenants who “divide their time”, as they say, between AK and TX. Palin loves TX crude, esp the money she can get from those who own it.

  9. Thanks, Malia, for keeping this is the public eye and connecting the dots. As far as the C4Pers go, let them continue to rant and rave all they want to as Palin leads them on her path to destruction. They think they know the real Palin, but they don’t. Palin is using them to enrich herself and stroke her own ego. I’ve never understood people who call themselves Christians who are so willing to support a person when she is so wrong for this country in every way, and every word that comes out of her mouth is not only a criticism but is also a big fat lie. You’re correct. Palin cannot expect to have it both ways. She uses every opportunity she has to criticize President Obama, and as Richard Feinberg has stated, Palin’s form of governance is superficial and frightening. Her only interest is in getting power. What to do with it after she gets it, she hasn’t a clue. She appears to respond to things via her gut. We’ve had a president in recent history who governed the same way, and that is why we find ourselves in the predicament we are in today. Good for the C4P folks that they support Palin, but they shouldn’t think that the rest of us will blindly support her when we know she has no business running anything, not even a lemonade stand. They can have her with my blessings.

  10. What a beautiful leak – twenty thousand barrels of lovely lube a day. I love the oily mass that bulges outwards from a bent pipe. A brown Rorschach blot of the automobile culture. A creamy dreamy brown chocolatey nougat for the wildlife to absorb. Living towels soon to be buried by trowels.

An endless orgasm of brown to win the King’s crown. The ejaculate of Hell sent by the wind-whipped swell.

My most fervent hope is that all efforts to stop and mitigate this masterwork are failures. The incontinent flow of hydrocarbons shall continue for the decay of all.

I would love to see a sea of greasy Devil’s blood flowing into the ocean forever more. The spew that flew right on through.

Then the World can move on into its next phase, the Dark Phase of death, decline and destruction. Soon, all the works of humans will decay and so too will themselves be brought to the altar of slaughter, to account for their crimes of existence.

    1. iochroma, Very vivid writing! I understand today that the impressive Rick Perry, the Governor of Texas indicated that this was an act of God, and didn’t attribute any fault to man. I have to wonder if he has a connection to BP? Malia

It’s time to drive to a slicker, browner future: put your keys in the ignition because Big Oil needs your dollars to make more oily art.

For those who have already contributed, thank you for your kind support!
