happy new year

Happy New Year! On this the first day of the New Year there is reason to be hopeful that politicians in America have realized that voters are disgusted with both Republicans and Democrats and their focus on their own personal interests in re-election, instead of serving the best interests of their constituents. What ever you think about the appropriate measures to address the fiscal cliff, you must agree that there is a need to address the problem and reach some resolution. The Senate has 51 Democratic Senators and a mere 47 Republicans. The House has 234 Republicans and only 201 Democrats.  The Senate has approved the package which represents a compromise by both Democrats and Republicans by 89-9.   Thus even the majority of Republican Senators approved this compromise. While the package still has to be voted upon by the House, the indication is that it will be approved because the vast majority of Republican Senators voted in favor of the compromise. Now if the House fails to approve the compromise the clear indication is that it will be the result of the intransigence of the Republicans in the House. An unwillingness to compromise is not what the country needs, and is not what we elected our Congressmen and women to do. While both Republicans and Democrats elected our representatives to protect the interests of the people who voted for them, it is clear that by far, the very “best interest” of the country, can only be served by reaching a compromise. We’ll know soon is the House Republicans are looking out for America’s best interests.
