It’s Breast Cancer awareness month. Who hasn’t watched a NFL Game and noticed the pink shoes and gloves worn by these hulking men. Men and women across the country are working to focus attention on this disease unique to women. Most families have lost a mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, daughter, or niece to this devastating disease. Every year in the United States alone approximately 40,000 women die from breast cancer. Given the tragedy this disease can inflict on any woman and her family, how could anyone criticize a woman who is a breast-cancer survivor? Let me show you.
Exactly seven days before the election of the President of the United States, Ann Romney has written a story about her struggles with breast cancer. It was featured in Glamour Magazine. The suggestion is that Mrs. Romney wrote the article because it is breast cancer awareness month. However the strange thing is that the focus of the article was about what a great husband she has and why he should be elected President. The concluding three paragraphs of her article focus on Mitt.
“I believe this speaks volumes about his character—and about why he’s running for president. For him, it’s about giving back to his country in order to make things better for people, for our fellow citizens. He wants to ensure that all Americans have access to the quality health care they need. And he also wants to ensure that women have the economic opportunities they deserve.
Because the fact of the matter is that women across the country are struggling. Some are facing medical battles. Others are struggling to find work in this tough economy. Others are slipping into poverty, trying to keep food on the table for their kids. For women, these trials often come at inconvenient times or all at once.
I’m moved by their stories of selflessness and compassion. They reinvigorate my commitment to raising awareness about breast cancer and the host of struggles too many women are facing in America today. I’m both grateful and humbled to have the opportunity to participate in this effort.”
If you consider only what Ann said, how could anyone complain about her efforts to help women across America deal with the potentially fatal disease? The reason is clear! Ann Romney has used her challenge with Breast Cancer to pretend that her husband would be sensitive to women’s health issues if elected. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here are the facts:
1. Mitt Romney has declared that if elected that he would take immediate action to de-fund Planned Parenthood. He said:
“I’ve said time and again that I’m a pro-life candidate and I’ll be a pro-life president,” Romney said in an interview with The Washington Post. “The actions I’ll take immediately is to remove funding for Planned Parenthood. It will not be part of my budget.”
Planned Parenthood provides nearly 750,000 breast exams each year to women who could not otherwise afford these services.
Planned Parenthood also refers women for mammograms and helps them find grants to pay for the service. Planned Parenthood also hosts visits from mobile mammography.
2. Mitt Romney has taken the position that he would work to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) from the first day in office. He said:
“On his first day in office, Mitt Romney will issue an executive order that paves the way for the federal government to issue Obamacare waivers to all fifty states.”
Romney’s own plan for health care doesn’t provide care if the patient has a pre-existing condition.
Ann Romney survived breast cancer due to it’s early detection. Money and health insurance were never an issue for her. That wasn’t the case for Colleen Loudonville of New York who said:
“”I almost ignored the lump. How serious could it have been? I was 27 and had no family history of any kind of cancer. Then I remembered Planned Parenthood …. Since I had no income at all, and dwindling savings, this was a great option for me. I didn’t have to decide between breast care and rent. … There is no doubt in my mind that Planned Parenthood saved my life.” – Colleen L., Loudonville, NY
Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses teach patients about breast care, connect patients to resources to help them get vital biopsies, ultrasounds, and mammograms, and follow up to make sure patients are cared for with the attention they need and deserve.
It is offensive and shameful that Ann Romney would use breast cancer as a tool to gain sympathy. Mitt Romney may have been a great husband to her, but he would be a lethal President for many less fortunate women.

The problem, Malia, is that the Romneys know no shame, only entitlement. We need women out in force to vote against He-Who-Would-Be-King…and his consort. Heaven knows if Ann would have time to be First Lady because she’s so self-absorbed.

“Self-absorbed” is the perfect description of her.

Hi Malia — I normally try and give the spouse of a candidate a break (except Callista and her Aqua Net that ate the ozone), but Ms. Romney has become quite shrill in the past few months and has really invited any criticism she receives by being such a political surrogate instead of just a spouse. I would like to point out that breast cancer is not unique to women, about 10-20% of all breast cancer cases are in men. Peter Criss of KISS being one of the more outspoken male breast cancer survivors.

shoefulofdrool,
Normally I would agree, and don’t think that who the wife of a candidate might be is relevant. However when Ann Romney does something like this, I am outraged!

Excellent post, Malia!
Women with breast cancer definitely need support from their loved ones and the community.
But women also need (women other than those who are multi-millionaires), is affordable health care with no restrictions on pre-existing conditions as well as guaranteed medical leave and sick days from work.
MItt Romney has clearly stated that no one EVER died from lack of insurance because if you don’t have insurance you can go to the emergency room and they’ll take care of you for free. Not only are both of those things a complete lie. They do nothing to prevent illness nor deal with chronic illness like cancer.
More shame on Ann Romney as well as her husband.

jk,
Yes, last time I checked they didn’t offer screening mammograms in the E.R., but they’ll start an IV for a woman too sick from her breast cancer to keep anything in her stomach. As she dies, she won’t be dehydrated.

Screening mammograms are now free – under the new HCA. They are a covered service, as are DEXA (bone scans) and many other tests. An ER is not an appropriate way to do screenings.

I’ve been wondering if it is actually Ann Romney who wants to be President. From Mother Jones, more recorded audio of an address Mitt made at another private fund raiser in which he says: “David, you mentioned Ann, and the fact that she insisted that I get in this race. That is the truth. I wanted to talk it over with her. And every time I’d say, “Let’s talk about the pros and cons,” she’d say, “Talk to the hand, talk to the hand. We’re just doing this. We’ve got to do it.” And so she absolutely insisted that I get in this because she was convinced that I was the only one that had the capacity to beat President Obama.”
Further, Ann’s use of the very dated and sarcastic “talk to the hand” slang gives an indication of what she is really like when one gets close to her — Leona Helmsley redux.
Voting for Romney would be voting against one’s best interests in every respect.

Hi Malia!
Great writing! My friend’s mother-in-law, 60 y.o., had breast cancer and was unemployed. Planned Parenthood in Texas (Tarrant County) SAVED her life, and now she is a breast cancer survivor for almost 2 years now. Rick Perry is trying hard to defund Planned Parenthood in Texas. It would be very devastating for millions of women and other poor Americans if Mitt Romney in the Oval Office. Ann Romney is full of shit and it’s all about herself and her family.
Just watch ABC news this morning, Gov. Chris Christie praises President Obama in response to Hurricance Sandy.
I just hope that people need to go to vote and VOTE FOR THE RIGHT CANDIDATE- OBAMA.

kosenrufumom66,
I am proud to tell you that the current National President of Planned Parenthood is a friend from Dallas! She is an amazing husband and strong advocate for women.

Shame on her, indeed. She’s seriously disconnected from our reality; we know that–in fact I don’t for a minute believe her experience with breast cancer in any way parallels mine.
But Glamour? Why would any magazine publish such an article? Even if it weren’t for the political content, it has zip bearing on the subject matter. Have they no editorial sense?
I will never read, much less buy, another issue of Glamour magazine. Cheap shot, and I really don’t like being taken for a fool.

Sarah,
I couldn’t believe it was in “Glamour” either! It just made it all the more worse!

From a real breast cancer survivor, Ann Romney has no idea what real people with real breast cancer has to go thru. I was fortunate to have good insurance and 6 years later, have been released as cured. Thousands of dollars later, I am still alive. 2 of my friends were not so lucky. They didn’t have insurance and are no longer with us. I miss them very much. The last thing women of America needs is Mit Romney and Paul Ryan in charge of our bodies.
Women of America, if you care about your life and your family, vote Obama/Biden!
I wouldn’t bless breast cancer on anyone and without health care, you won’t be around to vote right next time if you vote for Romney if the bastard invades your breasts!…..or uterus, or ovaries. We need “Obamacare”!!!!
Get those mammograms! My doctor sent me to Karen G.Komen for the diagnostic biopsies to confirm what the mammogram found. Losing your breast/s and hair isn’t fun, but being alive is worth it! Let every woman have the opportunity to have a mammogram so she can live too! Breast cancer can strike anyone….even men. Planned Parenthood is there for them too!

Mrs. Gunka,
I am so sorry that you had to experience this devastating disease, but I am thrilled you are ok! I too have lost a friend to breast cancer, and have two close friends who have been treated, but it is only because of early detection that they are both alive. It offends me that Ann Romney is using this to suggest that Mitt is in tune with women as she is the epitome of a woman who is alive today only because of early detection, which would not be available to many women under a Romney administration!

I believe Ann (Dancing Horsey) Rmoney would use anything and anyone to further her own ambition. She is one of those people that the more you see and learn about her, the more you don’t like anything about her. I dread her getting within 100 miles of our White House with the dimwit she is married to.

My cancer was found on a routine mammogram, only because we were moving I got it done instead of my usual procrastination. It was the size of a small pea. Caught early, but had I put it off I would probably be dead…fastest growing breast cancer known. Had 3 “lumps” biopsied. One was a “cancer in situ”…..encapsulated, non malignant and does not move. This is what Ann had. Simple lumpectomy and it’s gone. All cells are per-cancerous. Mammograms make it possible to find them and biopsies to diagnose. Take away Planned Parenthood and hundreds will die. Had I waited to find a lump by self examinations it would have been to late. Most breast cancers take years to grow and can still be treated. The kind I had will kill you before you feel it. It had grown to marble size in 3 weeks from diagnosis to surgery! Ladies, don’t put them off! No one in my family had ever had breast cancer!

Mrs. Gunka,
Thank God you had the mammogram when you did!

The Romneys seem to think that the presidency is the least America can do for them.

Anne
The fact that Ann Romney is willing to ignore her husband’s intention to defund Planned Parenthood in spite of the fact that it offers mammary exams to detect the very breast cancer she suffered from is a referendum on the characters of both Romneys. He always uses her as a spokesperson for women’s issues, but with her cluelessness and the insulation from everyday realities that their wealth offers, she does so much more harm than good. She was fortunate enough to have her cancer detected and treated, but her husband’s proposed policies would deprive many other women of that chance. As a result, they would most likely be near death by the time it was detected–either because they couldn’t be treated in time or treated at all.
