You remember that amazing specimen of a Republican, leading the war on women, Todd Akin? He’s the one who astutely gave his medical understanding of the consequences of a “forcible rape” on woman’s body. Thank God he clarified for us that women who are really raped, and don’t want a resulting pregnancy, can “shut that whole thing down.”
Todd Akin has now analogized his opponent in the Senate race in Missouri, a female, Claire McCaskill to a dog. He expressly said:
“She goes to Washington, D.C. It’s a little bit like one of those dogs, ‘fetch,’…”
This recent comment reminds men and women around the country of the reason that we were so offended by his “legitimate rape” comment. Even though Republicans encouraged Akin to drop out of the race after the legitimate rape comment, Mr. Akin refused. Now that the deadline for Akin’s withdrawal has passed Republican are not only supporting Akin, financially, but the are also campaigning for him. Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Rick Perry have all hit the campaign trail for Todd Akin.
“A chain is no stronger than its weakest link, and life is after all a chain. “
Surely the Republican Party recognized that Akin is the weak link in their chain, and they should discard that link so they would be stronger. Yet not only are they not discarding him, they are supporting him, and giving him money.
The people of the United States should demand a strong Senate. No Senator, Republican or Democrat, is excused for being ignorant, uneducated, or a bigot. Yet even after such outrageous comments, and previous condemnation by Republicans, Todd Akin is still enjoying the support of Republicans. By giving Akin money and campaigning for him, Republicans empower Akin to say and do more outrageous things to disparage women. No longer do we blame the Republican Party for standing ideally by as Akin attacked women. Now we blame Republicans for enabling him to continue to disparage women, and especially Claire McCaskill. Even though Claire is Akin’s opponent, she is THE Senior Senator from Missouri. No female Senator, regardless of political party, deserves to be called a dog.
Shame on the Republican party for putting Todd Akin in a position to continue to wage war on women in this country.
UPDATE ********************************
Remember that Mitt Romney said he thought Rick Santorum would be a possible Vice Presidential Pick, and thus has the judgment necessary to lead this country. Romney-Santorum-Akin, is a frightening commentary on the state of the Republican party.
Even more frightening is the fact that the actual pick of Romney is Paul Ryan, who co-sponsored a forcible rape bill.

I know not “all” Republicans are stupid and condescending, but; Todd Akin is really over the top. I am actually a pretty mild mannered guy, but; this guy and his supporters deserve each other. If the people of Missouri elect him, they deserve him and it will speak volumes about the intellect in that state.

Bill,
It’s hard to understand how ANYONE could support him, much less campaign for him like Newt and Santorum. I hope it secures their fate and future careers because they once backed him after knowing his attitude about women.

Poached Medium,
He is proof that the Republicans are more concerned about control and reelection than about the good of the American people.

REPUBLICANS CAN SAY OR DO ANYTHING AND THE WOMEN ON THE RIGHT ARE RIGHT BEHIND THEM. Its the most shocking thing. I can’t understand these women reasoning for voting republican..I never ever will. For all the contempt they show for women. NOT ONE GOP SIGNED the LILY LEDBETTER..NOT ONE GOP SIGNED THE PROTECT WOMEN AGAINST VIOLENT ACT..and yet they say the numbers for women are all shifting to Romney. WTH?

Let’s face it. Way too many voters are uneducated, ignorant, and bigoted. Akin is a perfect fit for those morons. I love dogs, and the dog community should be thoroughly offended by his remark. Akin is a bad dog who takes a dump in the living room over and over, and his Republican owner doesn’t bother to clean it up. Maybe it’s time for an intervention from the public health department.

Steve,
You are right! Akin is the dog, and somebody needs to call the dog-catcher.

Akin has now been if not replaced in his “leadership” position by Mourdoch. Despite the latter’s weak “apology,” having beeen spoken in public his words pose a clear and present danger to all women, since it’s not hard to conceive of a defense argument by which any rapist can build a justification of his crime by referring to those words. Mourdoch can and should be cited as an accessory to every and each case of rape occurring after he spoke his atrocity. There is an excellent precedent for this, in fact set by an American predsident, in fact set by the first -Republican- president! I refer of course to Lincoln on congressman Vallandigham: “Must I shoot a simple-minded soldier boy who deserts, while I must not touch a hair of the wiley agitator who induces him to desert?”

Malia – I too was struck by the timing coincidence, since I really wrote because I wanted you to do something about Mourdok, and would have sent a direct e-mail giving more detail if I’d had your eaddress. But while yours is brilliant satire, my comment is (altho perhaps pedantically) deadly serious. Even preceding the possibility of Mourdok’s statement being raised in court – in that case the lawyer using it to defend a plea of temporary insanity – it can only serve to at least encourage the possibility of actual rape in the mind of a potential rapist.
Who can say what goes on in such a warped mind? (another coincidence, see today’s news – http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/26/nyregion/gilberto-valle-accused-in-plot-to-kidnap-women-and-cook-them.html) And how many actual, or potential, rapists truly believe in God – probably only a small percentage, but I’d think given the numbers involved it’s safe to say that at least some do. And while Mourdok’s comment might not be the actual trigger for commiting a rape, it can surely only be encouragement to some, leading them towards and over the line from thought to action. This is a matter I haven’t seen raised, but I think it has to be, and perhaps you’ll consider doing a fresh blog post on just this issue. By the way, the point holds true even if Mourdok’s apology had included a detailed discussion of the opposition between free-will and God’s omnipotence.
