Dobie Tracker,
I know you are right, but the thought of that deer in the trash can was a little too vivid. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to eat Chinese food without thinking about the deer. I'll still eat it, but I'll think about this when I order.

Malia, oddly enough it does have something to do with a recent "redneck" post on your blog. And as I reflect, it also goes with my comment to the blog. Folks in Kentucky were grossed out by an Asian restaurant serving road kill deer. Well, "rednecks" regularly retrieve road kill deer and process it for food and/or taxidermy. Up here in Ohio, it's usually a race between the rednecks and wildlife workers to recover road kill deer. I'd be looking for Bristol and the Empress to do a photo op at the Red Flower soon.

(I wonder if Ron White's tour bus was in Kentucky recently.)

Ok this may be strange to those who live outside Alaska, but up here, road kill is given away to charities.

I am speaking specifically of moose when the somewhat frequent vehicle/moose accident occurs.

This is a lot of meat to waste.

Troopers are usually on the scene fairly quickly as this is not a small accident.
Moose weight approx 1200 or more pounds and vehicles are often very damaged.

It is not like the driver leaves and the moose is left for a long time where the meat would go bad.

Somestimes the moose unfortunately is not killed outright and the Trooper ( or car owner if they have a weapon) will put the animal out of it's misery.

This is a fresh kill, only done with a vehicle instead of a weapon, and likely some of the meat in the injured areas is not useable.

The rest is good meat, clean, healthy and there is absolute no need to waste it.

Now if this dear had been lying on the road in the sun for a while and the meat was spoiled that would be a different matter. No info given in story for how long the animal had been exposed to the elements. That could alter the situation significantly.

Still, not right to use the meat in their restaurant ---customers should not be fed food that may not have been sanitary-----but i would have no problem if they took it home and used it themselves IF it was a fresh kill.

I imagine people in Maine and other rural U.S. states do this as well.
