When I learned the Clint Eastwood was the ‘surprise’ guest tonight at the RNC, I was puzzled as I had seen this commercial during the Super Bowl.
Based on this commercial, I had the distinct impression that Eastwood was an Obama supporter. After his speech tonight, what do you think happened?

I see signs of dementia in him. What a disaster.

Are you serious?! Do you not remember his absolutely abysmal treatment of Sandra Locke his live-in lover? When she became pregnant he told her to get an abortian and take a hike. When she was going to bring a palimony suit against him he quickly said he’d get her a three picture deal from Warner Brothers. Only what she didn’t know was that Eastwood was pulling the strings behind the scenes. They gave her a deal but then turned down the thirty(!) prospective scripts she brought, they never had any intention of letting her make movies. He forced her to accept the terms while she was ill after a double mastectomy and undergoing chemo.
So she brought a fraud suit against him. Finally she won and was vindicated. But Clint Eastwood is a complete bastard, always has been, his movies are forbidden in my home. He’s always been a republican.
“l am certainly not politically affiliated with Mr. Obama. It was meant to be a message about job growth and the spirit of America,” Eastwood, a longtime Republican voter, said Monday evening on Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor” about the ad.” Eastwood was against the auto bailout. “But I’m a big hawk on cutting the deficit. I was against the stimulus thing too. We shouldn’t be bailing out the banks and car companies. If a CEO can’t figure out how to make his company profitable, then he shouldn’t be the CEO.” (from the LA Times)
He’s a cynical prick. Tonight he looked senile, doddering and completely out of it. I cannot believe he’s still involved with making movies. Clearly someone else is doing the heavy lifting while Grandpa talks at empty chairs.

Barbara,
i didn’t know this about Eastwood! Thanks for the information, and I’ll never be able to watch one of his movies again, without thinking about the man he really is!

People criticized the Superbowl ad because it made Clint look like an Obama supporter even though he was an R. That’s probably why he went to the rnc to try to redeem himself, which instead came of like an insane failure. It also makes the Rmoney campaign look like fools for not vetting that after all their pre hype PR. Massive failure.

In an interview with the Guardian newspaper November 1 2008 Eastwood said the following:
“What does he, a lifelong Republican, make of Sarah Palin, John McCain’s ‘bit of fluff’ vice-presidential nominee? ‘You can’t help but like her. She’s got a certain charm. Because of the way she talks and everything, she’s obviously from a rural area, but that’s refreshing in a way. I like her.”
I rest my case. But I must correct a name, it’s Sondra Locke, not Sandra as I misspelled it in my prior comment.

Barbara,
he also has seven children and some with women other than his two wives, so you could understand why he would like Palin.

Puzzling, indeed. His bizarre presentation was completely opposite from this ad…instead of pulling together he was putting down and completely disrespecting our president. I didn’t think it was amusing at all and lost a lot of respect for Eastwood. He certainly didn’t “make my day”!
It really bothers me about all the negativity toward Obama, when in fact the very day he was elected, the republicans got together and decided to oppose everything Obama tried to get done, even if they were in favor of the bill, just so he would be a one term president. I hope the American people make the right decision and elect Obama in spite of all the opposition and see the repugs for what they are…. self-centered liars.

Kallie,
The contrast was remarkable, and a commentary on the Republican convention. To go from this commercial talking about working together as a united country to being so divisive, it was a stark contrast to the Super Bowl commercial that was so effective.

Morgan Freeman very likely lost some respect for his good buddy Clint and more likely feels sorry for him.
Clint is 82 but I am afraid age had nothing to do with his disrespect for President Obama who I doubt strikes anyone as being the kind of person who would have used the language Eastwood implied he used.
It was embarassing.
It was ugly in the undeserved disrespect for the man and for the office.
It made Eastwood look like a small person.

Dobie Tracker,
It was hard for me to watch. one of my friends told me she had to turn off the television after the “joke’ about what the President couldn’t do to himself. i would have turned it off if not wanting to see Romney’s speech.

Morgan has long admired Eastwood, loved working with him.
Morgan also gave a $1,000,000 check to President Obama’s campaign.

This guy supported Arnold S., no surprise he supports Romney. He’s a Republican not a Democrat. When he made the above commercial Eastwood said it was not an endorsement of President Obama, as the GOP had claimed. He said it was in support of the autoworkers, none of whom are running for president at this time.

Gindy53,
I know you are right, but it was hard to watch that commercial and not realize that it’s reference to “half-time” was memorable, and that it surely could have been interpreted as the promotion of the president.

Clint’s been showing signs of dementia. The guy who ran for mayor because of an issue with his bar never would have pimped himself out for products or Mitt Romney. He never would have been part of a reality show. He was a more private person. He’s still and great actor and director, but the real life Clint Eastwood we knew is dead.
Note to Sam Elliot: you’re the last cool western actor. Please don’t wander into Mittland.

Eastwood was “the perfect representation of the campaign: an old white man arguing with an imaginary Barack Obama.”

I was so sad watching him! I love his movies, and have always had a lot of respect for the fact that he went into directing in his later years.

Clint is a Republican, but he’s not a political activist. He was interviewed about the commercial and he did not feel the commercial favored a political party, he wasn’t showing support for the DNC, he wanted to show his support for the auto workers and he liked the commercial for it’s strong message of unity. He probably liked the huge paycheck he got for making the commercial. It was probably bigger than the “speaking fee” the GOP paid him for his convention performance.

Pete,
i liked him better before he got involved in politics!

He’s been involved in politics for years. He’s voted for every single republican candidate for president since Eisenhower and has been a huge contributor to the republican party, his involvement is NOT recent nor is it an aberation.

i guess i should have known that, given his affinity for guns.

Malia, no you shouldn’t have known that, Clint Eastwood has never been known as an outspoken political activist for the Republican party, like Ted Nugget or Chuck Norris. He hasn’t been involved in politics for years, the way Barbara tries to suggest. He has always been more of a private person, he doesn’t like the spot light, he’s never been a cheerleader for the Republican party. You rarely see him appearing on the talk show circuit to promote his own movies! So he’s not out in public stomping for republican politics! He doesn’t make public announcements about his political views, but if you did the research you could find political information about Eastwood, just like you could for any person in the world. I feel sorry for Clint. Sure they paid his “speaking fee” but the Romney campaign took advantage of him in a very ugly way, they were fully aware that he appeared to be senile and foolish and they allowed him to go on national television because his name recognition was more beneficial to their lack luster campaign. Sad sad sad!

Pete,
Thanks for your kind words. i think this is an example of my fairly new (last three years) writing about politics in America.

It really isn’t you Malia, Bill Maher had this to say on his show, Real Time, last night about Clint Eastwood, “I had no idea about his politics until last night, I knew he was a republican but I thought he was one of the old school reasonable ones, I didn’t realize he was a “down the line” right wing Azzhole!” Maher has been hosting his show about politics for 20 years, although he’s a stand up comic and not a political expert, he would have known about Eastwood politics if Clint was active and involved. But just like you, me, and almost everyone else watching, he was also shocked by Eastwood.

Pete,
Thanks for the insight! If Bill Maher didn’t know about Clint, then i don’t feel so clueless!

. . .
Clint Eastwood has a new movie coming out and Eastwood wants to make sure that the new republicans spend their money to see it and NOT boycott it because of the SuperBowl commerical, where he supported the loans to the American automobile industry, that the new republicans refused to vote for and it appeared he supported President Barack Hussein Obama; so since Eastwood is a moderate republican, he needed to redeem himself to these new republicans.

i’m sure you are right, but the funny thing is that by doing this he hurt them more than helped them!
