Last night was the Republican Debate in Florida. We were spared the pleasure of watching Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry make fools of themselves. Instead we watched the last four candidates, Santorum, Gingrich, Romney, and Paul, argue amongst themselves regarding such burning issues as our relations with Cuba, whether English should be the first language of the United States, and whether Puerto Rico should be a state or remain a territory. There seemed to be no controversy about what language should be the dominant language of America. The crowd seemed to have no opinion regarding the appropriate treatment of Cuba. Nobody cared if Puerto Rico was a territory or state. The U.S. economy was first and foremost in the minds of everyone in the audience, and relatively little time was spent on that issue.
Mitt Romney had a new debate coach. The change in Romney’s tone and willingness to aggressively respond to Gingrich paid off. No longer is Romney willing to be attacked by Newt Gingrich without responding! The amazing thing is that Newt Gingrich, who has become the attack dog, characterized attack adds as “disgusting” and explained that Republicans are only helping Obama by the negative ads, and that they don’t know how much damage is being “done to our team.”
The candidate who has been most outspoken about the destructive effects of negative campaigning in the Republican primary, has become the most aggressive candidate to attack the others.
In the debate last night Newt attacked Mitt Romney because some of his personal investments included bonds he bought through a fund that included some bonds of Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae. Romney explained that these were purchased on his behalf as part of a blind trust, and that he was in essence loaning the money to Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae, instead of taking money from them. Unlike Newt, Romney was an investor in the companies, instead of an independent contractor taking money from them. Gingrich had virtually no response. In addition, Romney pointed out that Newt had made similar investments, so he should not be complaining about the investments of Romney. Gingrich has no response to that statement either.
My favorite exchange came when the two were discussing illegal immigrants, and the difference in their positions. Newt seemed to focus on his position that we should not deport grandmas and grandfathers who have been in this country for many years. Mitt Romney responded by explaining that illegal immigrants who are grandmothers and grandfathers are not the problem, and if elected president he wouldn’t be rounding up old people to deport them. Newt had no response.
This debate could only have been better if Mitt Romney had talked about the absurdity of Newt running as the Washington outsider, only because he QUIT after serving in the U.S. Government 20 years. He might have mentioned the absurdity of a man running as the conservative candidate, who has been endorsed by the Palins, and portrays himself as a man of honesty and family values, and yet was unfaithful to his first two wives, and was sanctioned by the House of Representatives for Ethics Violations. Romney could have mentioned the misleading use of the term “Mr. Speaker” when Newt resigned as the Speaker of the House after the Ethics Violations and being sanctioned by the House $300,000.00. Romney could have mentioned Newt’s “pie in the sky” ideas like putting a colony on the moon for people to live, while balancing the budget here on earth.
It was clear to me that Santorum and Paul were present only because they have not officially dropped out, but that it is a matter of time. The only real question is whether the Newt can challenge Romney and I predict the people of Florida will not favor Newt. Newt can join Sarah Palin in being “Undefeated” but not holding any elected office. Perhaps they will endorse each other for the position of President of Ubekebeke-stan and they could name Herb Cain as their Vice President.

THE KISS OF DEATH:
The Palin Factor. Some D.C.-based establishment types were preparing to reconcile themselves to former House Speaker Gingrich, if not outright endorse him, before or after the South Carolina primary last week. But according to one such insider, who asked not to be identified because of her prominent corporate lobbying role, Gingrich fatally said on Jan. 18 — three days before the primary — that he would offer former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin a “major role in the next administration if I’m president.” That one statement scared the accept-Newt, Republican-establishment types. “That sure did it for me, and I think for a lot of other people in town,” the lobbyist said.

Mlia, I laughed at your pic of the NASA suits as Rachel Maddow on MSNBC did a Newt segment last night appearing in a NASA suit!!
The only thing I find that these two buffoons have excelled in — is the ‘victim’ mode.
When they accuse each other of putting out ads trashing them, they have the look on their face of ‘how dare you’ — like they aren’t doing it to each other. It’s already grown old — in fact, it grew old years ago but that ‘victim’ mode must be set out on Page 12 of the GOP Code playbook filled with old yellowing pages as it’s the ‘SSDD’ syndrome every election. They still think it’s the people that are the stupid ones, which there are, (but I’ll be nice and not say it!) and what skeletons they have in their closets won’t surface or what they have said and done in the past has also disappeared.
Surprise — the skeletons have arose from the dead!!! So many, there is not enough room in the closets.Guess that’s why Romney is building a bigger house — more closet space!!

I have to admit, that I would like to see as many that can, to keep going. I say this because the longer there is more in the mix, they keep staying in the ‘right/far right’ zone. They have to continue to pander or the other will pick up their support. It will then make it harder to pivot towards center due to time restraints and allows for more evidence of video of their comments, interviews, speeches and debates — all usable to come back and haunt them!!

I thought last night’s debate was quite revealing. Gingrich would never look directly at Romney when responding to Romney’s comments directed at him. In fact during the entire evening he only glanced at Romney once or twice toward the end of the two hours. When responding to Santorum, Gingrich would look at him. I think this is quite revealing about the character of Gingrich — I believe he lies a lot.
On the other hand, Romney was just the opposite; open and talking directly to all of the other candidates.
Looking this evening at lists of endorsers for all the candidates on Wikipedia, it is like this: Romney has an enormous number of endorsements compared to the others. Paul has quite a few and Gingrich has about as many as Paul, maybe a few less. Santorum lags behind with pitifully few endorsements, mainly from right-wing religious groups.
I think, however, that if one were going to use the endorsements list as a guide, then Romney’s list should be pared down by removing everyone who is listed as “Former” this or that officeholder or official because there are a very large number of this type. The other list don’t have but perhaps one or two of this type of endorser.
Paul won’t be the candidate; I think we all can agree on that. Given Santorum’s comments on abortions this past week, he should just go on home and forget about it; he’s toast.
I won’t consider voting for Gingrich due to his reputation, especially his disgraceful treatment of his wives. Romney talks good but he also scares me because of his past history when involved with buying and shutting down companies. The man is just so rich he cannot comprehend what it means to an average worker to suddenly find they are unemployed. Due to his wealth I’m afraid he would be an out-of-touch President who just doesn’t get it.
So this time around, I will once again vote for Obama. Even though he hasn’t been as effective as I hoped, I do think I know where the blame for that lies — across the aisle, so I can’t fault him for that. I think he tried hard to make a difference. I also believe he’s still more in touch with the average citizen than any of the current Republican candidates ever will be with the exception of Ron Paul.
Just my two cents worth.

Balzafiar,
I agree. This has not been the 4 years that I had hoped for either, but I feel Obama is by far the better candidate.

Frances,
What a great idea! I wonder if Fox would pay for a studio for her on the moon?

It’s a hoot to watch either Willard or Newt get indignant about negative ads they make about each other. The truth of the matter is that each one is exactly what the other says he is, and neither of them comes out of it looking or smelling good. Plus, contrary to Simple Sarah’s assertion that the GOP establishment is “trying to crucify” Gingrich, the fact is that both he and Willard are crucifying themselves and each other every time they open their mouths. Whichever man becomes the nominee will be badly damaged and diminished by their idiotic slugfests.
