In 2008 I had the privilege of hearing candidate Obsma at Reuinin Arena in Dallas, during the campaign. There was standing room only in the arena that held 17,000 people.  When the results of the 2008 election were final, Dallas celebrated the victory.

While most of Texas is Republican, the two most populated cities, Houston and Dallas, favored Obama.

Today our President was back in Dallas.  Much has happened since the election of 2008. America has been so focused on the economic problems that we have forgotten much of what this man has accomplished. He won the Nobel Prize.   It was under the direction of Barack Obama that we located and completed a precision raid on the compound of Osama Bin Laden.

The first bill signed by Obama was the Lily Ledbetter Act, requiring equal pay for women.

He appointed two women to the Supreme Court, one of whom is Hispanic.

Nationalized health care was passed.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was repealed.

He negotiated a $20 Billion fund to provide immediate help for the families affected by the Gulf Oil Spill.

Under Obama’s leadership we have begun to bring our troops home from Iraq.We still have 40,000 troops there and the war has cost over $900 Billion Dollars.

President Obama took the heat for bailing out the auto industry. Both GM and Chrysler were bailed out of unmanageable debt by the federal government, by making loans to the companies of roughly $50 Billion Dollars. GM has already repaid almost $7 Billion dollars. GM has added shifts and rehired laid-off workers. GM is profitable. The US auto industry is growing stronger and has gained 55,000 jobs at a time when we desperately need more jobs in the country.

What would President Obama talk about in this 30 minute luncheon presentation? Would he have the courage to address the economic issues facing the country? The presentation began with a video presentation which served as a reminder of the accomplishment of his administration over the last three years, and the importance of the next four years.

He emphasized the importance of the passage of the American Jobs Bill. The need to put pressure on Congress NOW was emphasized. It is not about the 2012 election but about creating jobs NOW. He emphasized that the importance of creating new jobs can’t wait for the election of 2012.

In a brave move he addressed taxes. It was a brave move because the luncheon was a fund raiser where tickets were $500.00 each. Thus many of the people in the audience were the very people who would be in the top 1% who would realize an increase in taxes. The President explained that many Americans, like Warren Buffet, feel like an increase in taxes is necessary to get the country back on the road to recovery and to reducing the debt. Speaking to the audience in an honest and direct way the President explained that taxpayers don’t like to pay taxes, and they would never volunteer to pay more. But we have to ask! By raising taxes for the wealthiest 1% of Americans, we come closer to resolving the debt which is spiraling out of control.

The luncheon resulted in raising more than $1,000,000.00 for the President’s re-election campaign. Without doubt the economic crisis facing the United States is worse than any other in my lifetime. However the Jobs Bill is a very specific and reasonable approach towards getting people back to work.  If this plan is not accepted by Congress, it is clear the Republicans are motivated by political considerations, and not what is in the best interest of the country. Political considerations are what got us into this mess, and if we are to dig ourselves out it must be a united effort of all the politicians in office.  How absurd to oppose a bill because it might help the country which might mean that the President would receive favorable reviews in Nov of 2012 and be reelected.  Are politicians so focused on the hope for failure of President Obama, that they would refuse to vote to restore stability to our national economy?
